1Information We Collect
aPersonal Information
The App does not require you to create an account. We do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, phone number, or precise location on our servers — in fact, we operate no servers. If you choose to enter an optional display name, it is stored locally on your device and is included in your personal Google Drive backup only if you enable cloud sync (see section 1c). It is never sent to us.
bStudy Data
Your study sessions, focus time, subjects, goals, achievements, and other study information are stored locally on your device. This information is not transmitted to our servers, and stays on your device unless you choose to enable cloud backup & sync (see section 1c).
cCloud Backup & Sync (Google Drive)
StudyTrack offers an optional, premium cloud backup & sync feature. It is turned off by default and is only activated when you sign in with your Google account. When enabled:
- Your backup is stored in a private, hidden folder inside your own Google Drive (using Google's restricted
drive.appdatascope). This folder is accessible only to StudyTrack — the App cannot see, read, or access any other part of your Google Drive. - We operate no servers and cannot access, read, or browse your backup. It lives entirely within your own Google Drive.
- The backup includes your study sessions, subject names, your preferences and settings, and your display name (if you set one). A random, non-identifying device ID is included so your data can be merged across your devices.
- Your data is transmitted and stored securely by Google Drive (encrypted in transit and at rest). StudyTrack does not add its own separate encryption layer.
- You can turn sync off, and delete your cloud backup, at any time from Settings → Backup & Sync. Turning it off keeps all of your data local to your device.
A manual, fully offline backup option (exporting and importing a file) is also available and never uses the network or a Google account.
dAnonymous Usage Analytics
We use PostHog to collect anonymous usage analytics that help us understand how the App is used and improve its performance and features. Examples of events we may collect include starting or completing a study session, viewing screens, using widgets, changing the app theme, completing onboarding, and interacting with app features.
These analytics are associated with a randomly generated application identifier. We do not send your name, email address, phone number, study notes, subject names, goals, or other personally identifying information to PostHog.
eAdvertising (Google AdMob)
On Android, the free version of the App shows rewarded ads through Google AdMob. These are strictly opt-in: an ad is only ever shown after you tap "Watch a short ad" to unlock an optional action — such as logging a past study session; exporting, sharing, or importing a backup of your data; or opening your weekly recap card or your monthly Study Wrapped. The App shows no banner ads, no pop-up ads, and no ads on launch or between screens.
Premium users see no ads. If you own the Premium unlock, the advertising SDK is never started, no ad is ever requested, and none of the data described below is collected for advertising.
- When an ad is requested, Google receives your device's Advertising ID along with standard device and network information (such as device type, operating system version, general region derived from IP address, and ad interaction events). This is collected and used by Google, not by us — we operate no servers and never receive it.
- Advertising data is not linked to the anonymous analytics identifier described in section 1d, and no study data — sessions, subject names, goals, notes, or your display name — is ever shared with Google for advertising.
- Where permitted by law, ads may be personalised — that is, selected using information about your interests and prior activity, as described in Google's policies linked below. Where consent is required (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland), ads are personalised only if you agree; if you decline, or if your choice cannot be determined, the App requests non-personalised ads instead, which are based on general context rather than a profile of you.
- Ad content is limited to a "Teen" maximum content rating. The App is not directed to children.
- If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, a Google-certified consent form is shown before any ad is requested, and ads are only requested if the applicable consent is in place.
Google's handling of this data is governed by How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and Google's Advertising policies.
fCrash Reporting (Sentry)
We use Sentry to tell us when the App crashes. When a crash happens, a report is sent containing the technical details of the failure — the error and where in the App's code it occurred, the App version, and basic device information such as the device model and operating system version — together with a short trail of the screens you visited and the buttons you tapped immediately beforehand, which is what lets us reproduce the fault and fix it.
The App is configured not to send personally identifying information with a crash report: no name, no email address, and none of your study data — sessions, subject names, goals, or notes. Your IP address is not stored: the App does not attach it to a report, and our Sentry project is configured to discard it rather than record it. There is no account to attach a crash to, and we do not assign you an identifier for crash reporting. Sentry is used for crashes only: it does not record your screen, replay your session, or track your use of the App. Crash reports are not linked to the anonymous analytics identifier described in section 1d, and nothing is sent unless the App actually fails.
gApp Blocker (Android Accessibility Service)
On Android, StudyTrack offers an optional App Blocker that blocks apps you choose while a focus session is running. It is off by default. Before it can work, the App explains what it does and you must turn on StudyTrack App Blocker yourself in your device's Accessibility settings. It uses Android's Accessibility Service API as follows:
- What it accesses: only the name of the app that comes to the front of your screen (for example, "Instagram was opened"). It uses this solely to check whether that app is one you chose to block while a focus session is running, and if so, to return you to your home screen and show a StudyTrack screen in its place.
- What it does not access: the App Blocker cannot read, see, or record anything on your screen — no text, messages, passwords, images, or what you type or tap. It is configured with window content retrieval turned off, so Android does not give it this information.
- Installed apps list: to let you choose which apps to block, the App shows a list of the apps installed on your device that have a home-screen icon. This list is read on your device when you open the App Blocker settings screen and is never stored or sent anywhere. Only the apps you choose to block are saved, and only on your device.
- Nothing leaves your device. Which apps you open, which apps you block, and when you were blocked are never sent to us, to PostHog, to Sentry, or to any other party. The App keeps only a simple count of how many times an app was blocked, stored locally and shown to you in the App Blocker settings screen.
- Analytics: the anonymous analytics described in section 1d may record that you turned the App Blocker on or off and how many apps you chose to block — never the names of those apps.
- The App Blocker is not an assistive or accessibility tool for people with disabilities; it uses the Accessibility Service API only for the purpose described above.
2How We Use Information
Anonymous analytics are used solely to:
- Understand how features are used.
- Improve the App and user experience.
- Identify and fix issues.
- Guide future feature development.
Your locally stored study data is used only to provide the App's functionality on your device.
Advertising data (section 1e) is used by Google to serve and measure the rewarded ads that keep the free version of the App free, and to detect invalid or fraudulent ad activity. We use it for no other purpose, and we receive none of it ourselves.
Crash reports (section 1f) are used solely to find and fix the faults that cause the App to stop working. They are not used to build a profile of you, and they are never used for advertising.
Information the App Blocker accesses (section 1g) is used only on your device, at the moment an app is opened, to block the apps you chose during a focus session. It is never stored, never sent anywhere, and never used for analytics or advertising.
3Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services:
- Google Play Services
- Google Drive— only if you enable cloud backup & sync; used to store your backup in your own Google Drive.
- Google Play Billing— used only for the one-time in-app purchase; payments are handled entirely by Google and no payment or card data reaches the App.
- PostHog (Anonymous Product Analytics)
- Google AdMob— Android only, free version only; used to show the opt-in rewarded ads described in section 1e. Not used at all for Premium users.
- Sentry (Crash Reporting)— receives a report only when the App crashes, as described in section 1f.
4Your Choices
Analytics collected through PostHog use a random application identifier rather than directly identifying information. You can reset this identifier by clearing the App's data or reinstalling the App.
If analytics consent is required by applicable law in your region, we will request your permission before collecting analytics data.
Cloud backup & sync is optional and off by default. You can enable or disable it, and delete your Google Drive backup, at any time from Settings → Backup & Sync. Turning it off keeps all of your data local to your device.
Advertising. Ads are never shown unless you choose to watch one, and you can simply decline. To remove ads entirely, purchase the Premium unlock — the advertising SDK is then never started. You can also reset or delete your Advertising ID at any time from your device's Settings → Google → Ads, which limits how ads are targeted and measured. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you can change or withdraw your advertising consent at any time from Settings → About → Ad privacy choices.
App Blocker. The App Blocker is optional and off by default. You can switch blocking off at any time from Settings → App Blocker in the App, and you can remove its access completely by turning off StudyTrack App Blocker in your device's Accessibility settings. Uninstalling the App also removes it.
5Data Security
Data transmitted for analytics is encrypted in transit using secure network connections. If you enable cloud backup & sync, your backup is stored in a private, app-only folder in your own Google Drive and is protected by Google's encryption in transit and at rest. We take reasonable measures to protect the information collected by the App.
6Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
